Being Wise

At the end of this past school year at Calvin College, one day before the official graduation ceremony, I stood before the Calvin community of students, graduates, parents, administrators, and faculty and gave my reflection on 18 years of education. My main point was simple: there are limits to my knowledge; I’ll never know everything about God or his world or his people.

It’s taken me a long time to be wise about the limits of my wisdom.

But a few weeks ago, during the closing session for the Summer Leadership Academy, I listened in admiration as the kids and teenagers who were part of that program gave their own reflections on their summer work. And there was a lot of wisdom and truth and beauty in what they said.

Madison’s kids are getting it. They’re not done; they never will be. But this church is raising fine young people.

I’m thankful for the opportunity to witness that.

It’s kind of inspiring…
